James Cameron has given an exclusive interview to Total Film about Avatar 2.

That's a subscription magazine but Games Radar have reported some of the more salient points.

Avatar 2 has been a very long time coming.

That's highly unusual. Hollywood likes to pump out a sequel to any popular film ASAP.

But James Cameron isn't enslaved to Hollywood. He can fund his own films and there's apparently a good reason for the delay.

Story.

He wanted solid stories for not just this next film but also the three to follow.

Each satisfying in their own right but also forming part of a bigger saga.

Star Wars style - our words, not his.

That might be rather clever.

Avatar was a joy to watch and a well deserved runaway success but its story, while good, wasn't very original.

Improve that one element, keep everything else the same and Avatar could become the new undisputed king of sci-fi.

Well named to cash in on the metaverse, which is all the rage. Avatar is the term used to describe a person's digital character in games.

Conceptually also solid for the metaverse with people in the films remotely controlling alien bodies.

Avatar 2 plot details?

Horrible mining company returns to Pandora. As much time has passed there as has for us out here, so Jake and Neytiri have a family now.

They hoof it for a reef sanctuary, which is supposed to be safe but an environment they're totally unfamiliar with.

Speaking of unfamiliar enviornment, story isn't the only known reason for delay. They also had to develop new technology to film the underwater sequences.

Sounds spectacular.

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to release in Australian cinemas on December 15, 2022.
