In an exclusive with Empire Magazine, James Cameron has revealed details about two of Avatar 2's female cast with whom he has famously worked - Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) and Kate Winslet (Titanic).

Sigourney will play Jake and Ney'tiri's adopted Na'vi daughter called Kiri.

The original film having released all the way back in 2009 your memory might be hazy on the details surrounding the death of Sigourney's human character in that film, Dr Grace Augustine.

So a quick refresher.

Mortally wounded during an escape from the big bad invading corporation, Grace was taken to the Tree of Souls and an attempt made to transfer her consciousness into her Na'vi avatar.

That failed and instead she joined Eywa, the Pandoran world spirit.

Has she reincarnated as Kiri?

Unclear.

Empire describe her as "playing an entire new character" which might suggest that Grace's consciousness hasn't merely passed in full into the body of Kiri.

However, cultures which believe in reincarnation don't regard it as a simple transference.

Consciousness is continuous but memory and sense of self typically not.

So Kiri could be an entirely new character who was previously Grace.

Kate Winslet will play a pregnant Na'vi warrior and co-leader of the film's oceanside dwelling clan.

She is called Ronal (pronounced ‘Ro-nail’) and even preggers enters the fray to defend her clan.

Our memory of Titanic is far less fresh and vivid than Aliens but we don't recall Kate's character Rose being especially badass.

Essentially she didn't drown.

Sigourney's Ripley on the other hand is widely regarded as one of the most badass in the industry.

Who survived repeated encounters with one of sci-fi's most fearesome foes.

Avatar: The Way of Water premieres in Australian cinemas on December 15.
