Series creator executive producer, writer, and voice actor in cancelled after its third season adult animated series Final Space Olan Rogers has launched a Kickstarter campaign to make an animated short plus a six part behind the scenes making of web docuseries.

They've already raised enough money to make those and the first few stretch goals.

The short titled Godspeed isn't explicitly Final Space related.

Implicitly is kind of is.

Legally he doesn't own Final Space so he can't explicitly pursue any kind of independent continuation, but Olan had a lot of ideas mapped out for the series which he can use in something new, i.e. this short, and implies that if it's well received it might spark interest in reviving Final Space.

Of the name he explained that the term "godspeed" is one of well wishing for someone about to begin a journey, and it reminds him of someone he knows.

One of Final Space's characters is Sheryl Godspeed, voiced by Ozzie Claudia Black most widely known for her roles in Farscape and Stargate SG-1.

It's an interesting strategy for reviving a cancelled series and also has the potential to seed a new one - though Olan doesn't make that point himself.

Just look at The Orville.

Seth MacFarlane had no work history with Star Trek but many other The Orville staff came from Star Trek series.

While legally and artistically a genuinely new and distinct franchise, spiritually its roots aren't hidden and many regard The Orville as the best Star Trek series ever made.

Our thoughts on Final Space?

We vaguely recall having watched the first episode a long time ago and not being super impressed by it.

Though we were planning to take another look and very nearly hit play on it this morning before seeing this news.

Final Space is available to stream now on Netflix.
