Geeked Week Animation
Posted By:

Netflix conducted their third day of livestreaming for their annual Geeked Week event celebrating upcoming genre content.

Day Three was dedicated to animation and while we don't have enough time to watch the full two hour stream, we have looked at all of the new teasers and trailers.

Farzar

Fair warning - this trailer contains frequent, explicit, sexual humour.

We're not so prudish that we can't survive adult humour but a constant stream of it isn't our idea of a good time so we can confidently remove this one from our to watch list.

For those still on board, here's the synopsis:

Egotistical human warrior Renzo liberated the planet Farzar from the evil alien Bazarack, and then established a human settlement under a huge dome, becoming the Czar of FARZAR. Years later, FARZAR is under attack by the evil aliens once again and Renzo’s well-meaning and not-so-bright son Prince Fichael ventures out with his special crew “S.H.A.T.” (Special Hostile Assault Team!), made up of a human-solider-turned-cyborg, clashing conjoined twins, an unhinged scientist, a highly incapable mutant and a mischievous little alien known as a chaos-celot. As they begin their journey to fight the aliens that want to kill/eat them, Fichael quickly discovers that all is not what it seems and he may be living a lie.

Farzar will release on Jul 15.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Being a big fan of the computer roleplaying game Cyberpunk 2077 we've been very eagerly anticipating this series set in the same universe.

What did we think of the teaser and clip?

Night City - where the game is set - is very recognisable in the teaser and the Maelstrom gang clip is also very reminiscent of the game.

Visually it's typical anime fare.

Would have been nice to hear some dialog.

We'll watch Edgerunners because it is CP 2077 related but these videos didn't rock our world.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners releases in September.

Entergalactic

With a name like that you's surely it's sci-fi - we did - but it's not. Even a tiny bit.

From the minds of Kid Cudi and Kenya Barris comes a story of two young artists navigating the twists and turns of finding love in New York City.

Gorgeous animation style and music though in the first look.

Entergalactic - the name of this series and the accompanying music album - releases this Spring (Oz).

Inside Job

We were unexpectedly won over this series' excellent writing and surprising characterization.

So are very pleased by the announcement which came out of today's livestream of a season 2 renewal.

Hooray!

And also a clip from the remaining half of season one which is "coming soon".

If you haven't watched the first half we happily recommend it.

For employees of Cognito Inc., conspiracies aren’t just theories, they’re a full time grind. Inside Job is a peek inside the actual Deep State, as one woman manages the chaotic office of lovable morons secretly controlling the world.

Arcane

With that title you could be forgiven for not thinking this title sci-fi but we accept Arcane co-creator Christian Linke's view that the League of Legends property is multi-genre and "super sci-fi".

Having no experience with the League of Legends game - MOBAs (multiplayer online battle arenas) simply aren't our cup of tea - we were completely blown away by this animated series' brilliance and beauty.

We have watched a fair amount of animation and Arcane is visually in a league of its own.

Interestingly Netflix didn't offer us footage from the second seaon.

Instead they gave us a clip from an upcoming YouTube docu-series about the making of Arcane and the clip is Christian Linke detailing previous work they had done with French animation studio Fortiche.

I always thought that if there's any super-power that we had in the beginning to make Arcane a thing it was whether or not we could really unleash the potential of Fortiche.

They succeeded and no doubt it was a major factor in the immense popularity of the series even in regions where animated shows aren't typically taken very seriously.

One downside is that they've set an incredibly high bar for any engagement with other elements of the franchise, i.e.. the games.

We looked at the computer roleplaying game Ruined King: A League of Legends Story which released alongside Arcane, saw that the game didn't boast the same impressive animation style as the series and dismissed it.

They're also now developing an MMO (massively online roleplaying game) and we'll apply the same high visual bar to it.

Arcane season 2 doesn't yet have a release date.
