Robert C. Cooper is a name well known to sci-fi fans as an executive producer, writer and director in all three Stargate series.

Two months shy of SG-1's 25th anniversary it has been announced that he will be showrunner for a new series called Generation Mars based on the book series by Douglas D. Meredith.

Generation Mars chronicles humanity's perilous extraterrestrial endeavour from the unique point of view of an extraordinary family. It’s an optimistic heart-pounding thrill ride based on hard science that will inspire adventure-seekers of all ages.

Why would anyone have kids on a planet that always seems to be actively trying to kill them? Because the future may depend on it. The year is 2053 and twelve-year-old Cas is famous on two worlds. She’s a true Martian, the first human being born on Mars. Twenty years earlier the first settlers arrived from Earth, and now Cas is about to step outside and see the Martian sky with her own eyes for the first time.

Interestingly the announcement includes no details about who will stream or broadcast the series but there are some interesting parties involved.

Not for profit Explore Mars Inc. whose chief goal is to see human exploration of Mars by the mid 2030's.

Dr Tanya Harrison is a geologist who has worked on multiple Mars missions over the past 13 years and is Director of Strategic Science Initiatives at Planet Labs - a US satellite data and imaging company.

Alyssa Carson, described as an "astronaut in training" and the youngest person to graduate from the Advanced Possum Academy.

Yes, that's real and no it doesn't involve Dame Edna.

Though five days of academic instruction, three weeks of preparatory webinars and some simulator time is all it takes to be designated an astronaut in training - plus $4000 US.
