Misfortune May

Netflix have published the opening sequence and given a May release to anime series Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune.

It might be ok?

This series is an animated adaptation of a brand-new military science fiction novel from Carlo Zen, author of "The Saga of Tanya the Evil." A young man named Akira volunteers to join a planetary orbital infantry force called "Yakitori" in hopes of changing his life. What does fate have in store for him?

We have scoffed at Netflix publishing opening sequences as promos.

Like most streamers they include a skip button for them because you'd be lucky to get most viewers to watch them even once.

But this one at least showcases what we'd say is a decent animation style and some basic sense of the story.

Without hearing any dialog which is where trailers can give away that a series or film is a dud, we'd have to file this one under "uncertain".

Hopefully a proper trailer will follow.

On first watch we noticed the dog-headed person with a moustache but on second in slow-motion to grab a screenshot for this post, also elephants and emus / ostriches. Maybe also frogs.

Our immediate reaction was that this might be on the very light side of science-fiction but reminded ourselves that Netflix's similarly live-action Sweet Tooth turned out to be clever and insightful.

It can be a mistake to equate furry with silly.

So we'll reserve judgement until we know more.

Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune is coming to Netflix in May.
