SNW: The Musical

It’s been a big week for Strange New Worlds fans. Over the weekend the much anticipated Lower Decks cross-over episode went live, earlier than scheduled to tie in with its premiere screening at San Diego Comic-Con.

The episode is called Those Old Scientists and features a version of the Strange New Worlds title sequence in the animated style of Lower Decks as well as live-action versions of Boimler and Mariner, played by the actors who usually voice the characters.

Also at Comic-Con it was announced that the upcoming ninth episode of Strange New Worlds will be called Subspace Rhapsody and is a musical episode.

The concept has the writers provide some pretext to justify why the entire episode contains song and dance. It’s been seen on a number of series over the years, first on the X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, later on Fringe and most recently on The Flash.

Apparently the pretext for this latest manifestation of the phenomenon is a subspace anomaly. Classic stuff.

Strange New Worlds season 2 is streaming now on Paramount Plus – expect episode nine in a couple of weeks.
