The first human is likely to set foot on Mars in the coming decades and that's an increasingly popular setting for fiction including 2015 film The Martian and released just this month narrative adventure game Deliver Us Mars.

Romantic comedies rarely tread new ground and even when there's a whole extra planet to work with, Space Oddity's trailer sounds like yet another application of the commercially proven Hollywood formula.

Love always wins out.

When Alex gives up on earth and decides to leave it all behind for a one-way mission to Mars, an unexpected romance forces him to choose between an uncertain journey to the stars or an even more uncertain journey of the heart.

Supposed to make us all go awwww but we ugghh'ed instead.

This guy has a ticket to Mars.

Many sci-fi fans would be red with envy.

Oh but no, some girl bats her eyes at him and his friends and family don't want him to go.

We all know how that's going to end.

Yawn.

Space Oddity is releasing in US cinemas and to digital on March 31, with no Australian cinematic release details at this time.
