SyFy UK and Ireland are rebranding to Sky Sci-Fi on July 26.

The older readers among us can probably remember the former Sci-Fi channel rebranding to SyFy back in 2010 because they didn't want to be so closely associated with sci-fi.

With the channel being mostly wrestling and reality shows, the sci-fi fans we knew didn't have that problem.

What they really wanted was for channel subscribers to stop asking for more sci-fi content.

The UK Sky rebranding is part of a bigger Sky rebranding effort but branding tends to be globally consistent where possible so we wouldn't be surprised to see this one go global.

While there is that bigger Sky rebranding campaign, sci-fi content has become much more popular among mainstream audiences and the cost of producing it, eg. special effects, has also dropped sharply.

So we think perhaps the SyFy channel might also be seeking a closer association with sci-fi.
