Tiny Tina Stands Alone

Popular sci-fi shooter Borderlands 2 has re-released one of its DLC, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, as a standalone title on PC, PS4 and XBox One.

Costing $14.95 (Oz), it's also free until November 17 (Oz) on the Epic Games Store.

For the benefit of non-gamer's, this and most DLC (downloadable content) add locations, story and or items to the original game.

A DLC by itself is worthless. It only works if installed alongside the base game program.

Re-releasing one as a standalone - i.e. can be played without the base game - is unusual.

This and the free week on Epic is perhaps an indication of how successful their free games program has been.

Developers are understood to be paid an amount by Epic to give a game away for a week, but it's also an opportunity for developers to get players enjoying one of their games which they probably would never have bought anyway.

If they enjoy it then maybe they're more inclined to buy one of their other, newer games.

Prior to the launch of Borderlands 3, the Borderlands 2 and another Borderlands title (not 1) were given away free on Epic. That giveaway included this Tiny Tina DLC, though not as a standalone.

Borderlands 3 was an instant best seller for its developers but maybe they're hoping this standalone release and giveaway can encourage a few more sales.
