Wyrmwood Interview

Complex have published an interview with ozzie zombie film-maker Kiah Roache-Turner and it includes some fascinating insights.

How did he get started?

That would have been around 1990, when I got my hands on a $200 Hi8 camera. The first thing we shot was pretty prophetic. It was a short film of me chopping up my younger brother and putting him in a bag, with absolutely no story. We showed it to our mother and she just burst into tears and said, “What have you done to my baby?” We realised you can really affect people with the cheapest tomato sauce splattered horror movie made in your kitchen.

A horror film career literally built on tomato sauce.

He later details that their first big success, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, was half filmed in his mother's backyard so apparently she recovered and forgave them.

Their followup film Nekrotronic was a bit of a bomb.

He appreciated having more funds on that film but not every decision having to be made by committee.

With their soon to hit cinemas Wyrmwood Apocalypse, they had better funding than Road of the Dead, but managed to retain creative control.

Kiah's recommendation for a zombie or lesser known Australian film to watch?

His.

Wyrmwood Apocalypse releases in Australian cinemas on February 10.

They've also published a fresh making of video. This one focuses on their cyborg zombie.
