Wright Out?
Posted By:

In a pair of recent tweets Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis executive producer Brad Wright has seemingly confirmed the leaked reports of Amazon not proceeding with him or his script for their new Stargate series.

Instead, according to the same leaker, Amazon have engaged The Expanse writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

What did Brad have to say?

MGM/Amazon will make another Stargate. It may just take some time for them to decide what they want to do. But they own it. Not me.

Thanks! But you won't hear news from me. MGM did hire me to write a pilot for a new show but that was just before covid hit. Timing couldn't have been much worse. All the players have changed in the interim so it's likely destined to gather dust. Would've been fun, though.

Neither is news but hearing him say this after the series finale of Amazon's record-breakingly expensive The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, strikes us as perhaps not a coincidence.

You might recall that we stepped outside the bounds of sci-fi to comment on that divisive series - describing it as a beautiful but terrible adaptation of Tolkien's works.

A generic period English drama supposedly set in Middle Earth. Canonical liberties abound.

But potentially enjoyable for viewers less familiar with the books.

We predicted that it might be popular and if so, Amazon could view that as a license to throw continuity and fandom to the wind with other series.

Like Stargate.

We're not going to panic or cry doom.

Wright isn't the only writer we'd trust to continue to story of Stargate.

And even if Amazon do trash Stargate, The Orville has proven that the spirit of one show can live on in another.
