A new mostly cinematic trailer has dropped for free-to-play mobile massively online roleplaying game / shooter Avatar: Reckoning.

Just announced at the beginning of this year and expected to release before its end, it is now slated for 2023.

Which means it won't be out in time to accompany the film sequel Avatar: The Way of Water in December.

Not ideal.

Though we might expect the film to dominate cinemas some way into 2023 and there are three more film sequels expected to release every other year.

Reckoning's trailer promises "an innovative rpg shooter experience".

Does it deliver?

Unclear but if it is there isn't any sign of it yet.

There's quite a lot of early game beta footage available on YouTube and it looks like a standard World of Warcraft style MMO that we've seen many emulations of.

The only noteworthy aspect of combat is with its engineer pet class.

Rather than robotic pets, they'll be Pandoran animals summoned by teleporter.

Story-wise your beginning mirrors the first film - you're a human company person piloting a Na'vi avatar and you get to know the natives.

Seemingly they don't care for human weaponry and suggest you need to learn to use a bow when you first meet them so possibly there could be separate Na'vi classes.

Avatar: Reckoning the iOS / Android online rpg shooter is expected to release in 2023.

Avarar: Frontiers of Pandora the PC / Xbox / PlayStation first person action adventure open world game is expected to release late this year.

Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to release in Australian cinemas on December 15.
