Berlanti is Back
Posted By:

Greg Berlanti is one of the biggest names in genre television and he has just signed on for four more years with Warner Bros.

Potentially noteworthy is the nature of the deal.

His previous deal, which Deadline report both Warner Bros. and he were moving towards renewing, saw Warner Bros. buy his whole not already spoken for slate of shows.

Then he signed on with a new agency under a deal which will see him paid more based on not just the number of shows he produces, but also their profitability.

And possibly also fronting more of the costs.

We find this remarkable because while he is one of the prolific producers of genre television and we've really enjoyed some of his shows like Arrow, Titans and Riverdale, many of his shows have been belligerently B-grade.

Tiresome yak-fests with an endless parade of ridiculous mindscapes.

Like Doom Patrol, which we find extremely difficult to watch.

Especially binge because it's so repetitive.

Titans leans more in this direction than we'd like but breaks it up with more substantial story and action.

Meanwhile Warner Bros. have sold off US Network CW which was where most of these B-grade efforts aired and most of the shows have been cancelled.

This new deal might speak to a future in which we'll see the highly capable Berlanti focused on making fewer better superhero (and other) shows, with bigger budgets.
