Doctor Wowza

UK entertainment magazine Broadcast has estimated the budget for the next series of Doctor Who could be in the region of 10 million pounds per episode. Up from 1 to 3 million.

The BBC declined to comment on the estimate but following Disney's acquisition of global streaming rights for the next series outside of the UK, it's not an unbelievable figure.

Regardless of the specifics of the new deal, back when Hugh Grant was teased as a possible next Doctor, we agreed with the rationale.

The vision is that the show can be a Marvel-like product, building franchises around the Doctor and other key characters in his many lives.

We have enjoyed the modern Doctor Who series but especially post Game of Thrones and the rise of streaming, the television landscape has left the modestly budgeted BBC series in its dust.

Sony's acquisition of Bad Wolf, the studio making the next series, and this new deal with Disney could give the long time humble series first class polish.

A show needs more than polish to be good.

We're looking at you Star Trek: Discovery.

But in the capable and trusted hands of Russell T. Davies and others who worked with him previously on Doctor Who, this could be fabulously wowza.
