Glaciered Combat
Posted By:

Indie developer Studio Snowblind have released a combat teaser for ultra post-apocalyptic aquatic play-as-an-uber-penguin (Tuai) action adventure souls-like Glaciered.

It looks impressive, though we couldn't completely follow all of the action.

There's the typical souls-like limited quantity self-heals, health and stamina, lots of dodging and one special melee attack called "crystal edge" on a cooldown.

Combat begins with a complicated looking ranged attack which didn't have indicator on the UI so we can only guess what it is.

Perhaps their equivalent of a bow or rifle snipe attack.

Perhaps an elite.

Over on the left we can also see loot - carb, vitamin, mineral, fat, protein.

Does make more sense than swords, wands or machine guns.

Possibly they're used in a similar manner to play-as-a-shark Maneater to purchase permanent upgrades to your body and abilities.

A series of tweets following the video detail some of the mechanics.

If you evade right before enemy attacks touche your body, this will be a Perfect Evasion. The higher level of concentration causes slomo effect, and it regains your stamina and gain heat on your wings, also achieve a short period damage immunity.

and

Tuai can store surplus heat into their crystal wings. By consuming that heat can perform Power Attacks which deal massive damage and staggering force. Stacked heat will be quickly radiated away so you should find out a right timing to use them during the combat.

and

Crystal Edge is a Tuai's ability that temporarily transforms the wings into crystal blades that can be used to attack a wide range. It deals reasonable damage and staggering opponents.

Love the concept and setting for this game.

Super original.

But this already sounds like they're wombling down the wicked path of combat convolution.

This year's uber souls-like title Elden Ring's combat design is sophisticated but logical and immersive.

There's no weird-arse button combos to learn or anything like that.

Every control performs one combat function - executing attacks, dodges, blocks, spells etc. and it all feels natural.

On a final, fatalistic note, we have a tweet which may hint at this game's death mechanic.

In the ocean, there are certain suitable places for laying eggs. The eggs laid there hatch when the parent dies and inherit all the memories and spirits from the parent. The parthenogenesis and memory inheritance makes Tuai almost immortal.

Glaciered's equivalent of resting at a bonfire or site of grace might be laying an egg.

From which you hatch in the event of your demise.

Glaciered doesn't have a release date but will release on PC (Steam).
