In the lead up to its cinematic release Pixar have released a short teaser for Lightyear titled You Know the Toy.

Anyone already familiar with this film's premise would know that it tells the story of the "real" Buzz Lightyear who inspired the toy line in the Toy Story films.

That's the point this teaser makes.

But the teaser was also accompanied by two promos (Welcome Cadets and Field Training) for Lightyear action figures and a voice cast chat focusing on the film's legacy - those toys.

Pixar are clearly looking to make the most of this film's unique merchandising potential.

Lightyear premieres in Australian cinemas on June 16.
