Metaverse Standards
Posted By:

The Khronos Group, a non-profit tech industry consortium with the goal of fostering interoperability standards, have established a Metaverse Standards Forum.

Founding members unsurprisingly include tech giants Meta (formerly known as Facebook), Microsoft, Sony, Huawei, Epic Games, Unity, Adobe an Nvidia.

Also Ikea.

Apple is conspicuously absent though unofficially known to be developing related technology.

How does this relate to gamers?

One of the main legitimate selling points of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) is the as yet still theoretical ability to buy a digital item (eg. an avatar or piece of clothing) from one vendor and use it in any digital space.

Gamers today can buy such cosmetic items as microtransactions but those items can only be used in their respective games.

The proposition for NFTs is that rather than being account bound to individual games, such items will be owned by players and able to be used in any game or other online space where thematically appropriate.

That will require the standards which this forum will establish.
