Netflix have released the full trailer for upcoming animated Star Wars inspired My Dad the Bounty Hunter series.

The full first episode has also been published on YouTube. It is exceptional.

While the November teaser was published to their general channel, this one came to their "After School" more kids oriented channel, suggesting reduced expectations.

Curious.

Episode one is brilliant and while family friendly, both story and dialog are sufficiently sophisticated to entertain adults.

It also succeeds in establishing its own distinctive identity.

The opening scene of dad as bounty hunter tracking and capturing a target is very reminiscent of chase scenes on the Republic capital of Coruscant in Star Wars.

Avoiding spoilers - seeing how his daughter comes to his son's defence in a game, how she raises money for a school fundraising drive and how she interacts with her father, this is much more than just homage.

This trailer?

Dad's job is to catch bad guys.

Then we see one of dad's targets - what appears to be a young female.

Having seen many sci-fi, fantasy and just regular action / dramas, immediately we know, she won't actually be bad.

Sure enough, dialog follows:

Dad: Our mission is to catch Vax so we can get you kids back home.

Sean: I want to show dad that we can help.

Lisa: You don't even know what your bosses wants with her. I followed her and...

Being a "love letter" to classic sci-fi is this a faithful reference or a tired trope?

Might be too early to make that call.

We'll see where they go with it.

My Dad The Bounty Hunter releases on Netflix on February 9, and we can't wait to see more.
