Not Quite Sci-Fi

On a very slow beginning to the sci-fi news week, we'll detour very slightly.

Netflix have released a trailer for an upcoming animated comedy series called Agent Elvis which features a jetpacking Elvis on the Moon.

Did this strike us as sci-fi?

No but those same two elements - a jetpack and the moon - were among those which signalled upcoming Apple series Hello Tomorrow! to be sci-fi.

Also in common with Hello Tomorrow! is period - which looks to be 50s'ish.

What Agent Elvis struck us as - putting aside comedy - is spy.

Bond films have a long history of the titular character carrying and relying upon fictional advanced gadgetry.

Arguably very mild sci-fi both in terms of advancement from present day and their prominence in the films.

Too mild to qualify as sci-fi in our view.

But that line is drawn in different places by different people and we saw an article today titled:

Netflix viewers are worried it could cancel new 'near perfect' sci-fi Lockwood & Co

Its trailer last month similarly struck us as more something else - in this case supernatural - than sci-fi but there were some hints of possible technology.

So we watched a few episodes. A comfortably above average young adult drama but the supernatural tag is accurate.

On the other hand in Hello Tomorrow! the advanced technology is both more central to the story and prominent on screen.

Elvis on the Moon is definitely quirky and possibly one we'll watch but probably not comment on again here unless there turn out to be hidden sci-fi depths.
