HBO have cancelled Ridley Scott's Raised by Wolves after two seasons.

Abubakar Salim who played Father in the series took to Twitter yesterday to foreshadow its potential cancellation and rally fans.

But HBO have officially dropped the axe.

While we are not proceeding with a third season of Raised by Wolves, we are beyond grateful to the stellar cast and crew, our creators Aaron Guzikowski, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and the entire team at Scott Free Productions, for their beautiful artistry and unique ability to immerse fans into the world of Kepler-22b.

We have mixed feelings about this news.

Raised by Wolves was a sci-fi drama of exceptional quality but it was thick with biblical themes and those are a tricky proposition in this genre.

After Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica reboot finale ended with essentially god is real and was responsible for everything, we wouldn't be surprised if many sci-fi fans tuned out at the first whiff of religion in this series.

With its cancellation we'll never know where they were going with this.

Was it a sci-fi story about a religion or a religious story dressed up as sci-fi?

We will drop one parting critique of the second and now final season.

In it Father revives an ancient android (Grandmother) who like him is black and there's a moment when he sees her unveiled for the first time and his reaction suggests attraction.

Maybe we're being over-sensitive but the moment to us felt very provincial - hearking back to a former age of entertainment when same race non-white characters of opposite gender would "naturally" be attracted to each other.

Raised by Wolves is available to stream now on Binge and Foxtel Now.
