Sony's Shaktimaan

Sony have announced that they're developing a new superhero film based on popular 1990s and 2000s Indian superhero TV series, Shaktimaan.

This is noteworthy not just for being a new superhero film but also for tapping into Indian popular culture.

In the west we're seeing a lot more Korean and Chinese productions.

There has also long been some hunger for and consumption of asian martial arts / samurai content.

But if you think of India and entertainment what will most likely come to mind is Bollywood musicals and they're not everyone's cup of tea.

Superhero films though? They're hot right now.

Sony now have several good and highly successful superhero films in their portfolio, eg. last year's chart topping Spider-Man: No Way Home.

If they repeat that success with this film it could create more global appetite for Indian culture in entertainment media.

There are very few details at this point except that they're planning a trilogy.
