Midgard Times who routinely report series renewals ahead of official announcements courtesy of production scheduling or activity tell us that Amazon's The Rig is gearing up for a second season.

We are more than slightly surprised. It's not a great show. Average and unremarkable.

It has a critics 67% (15 ratings) and a viewers 45% (269 ratings) score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Midgard Times scored it a fair in our estimation 6.5 / 10.

Of note is the small number of ratings which speak to minimal media coverage and a small audience on Prime Video.

We saw no promotion prior to it popping up on Prime last month (January 6) and ended up watching most of it.

Might have slept through some.

How did it get renewed?

As we remarked in relation to La Brea's recent third season renewal this could be a matter of sustainable budget.

In terms of writing and performances we'd say The Rig beats La Brea but was probably very cheap to make.

Set on an oil rig with a small cast and minimal but decent special effects.

What's it about?

A Scottish oil rig in the North Sea is enveloped in an unnatural fog that cuts them off from outside communications. Spores found in the fog cause infected crew members to experience behavioral changes. After examining the spores, a scientist onboard the oil rig suspects that an ancient parasite has been unleashed from the ocean floor.

If you're considering watching, it's a decent drama with solid performances from most of the cast.

Somewhat silly on the sci-fi front though which is largely injected into the story through a resident geologist.

Often spouting very creative "science".

With an expertise in rock she manages to make some extraordinary discoveries in a range of other fields because science is science, right?

Wouldn't recommend this one but if you've completely run out of other things to watch, we didn't find it an agonizing experience.

The Rig season 1 is streaming on Prime Video now, with a second series unofficially on the way.
