In an interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily, Australian actress Yerin Ha spoke about her role as Kwan Ha in Paramount series Halo.

Possibly clearing up a minor mystery surrounding her character's name.

Previously we remarked on her name being variably reported as Kwan Ha and Quan Ah.

Yerin revealed that her character was always intended to be Asian but:

I believe they weren’t sure whether the actor [chosen to portray Kwan] would be Korean or Chinese.

Ah ha!

Further she tells us after checking she could speak Korean, they gave her the Korean dialog ahead of shooting.

Which she and Jeong-hwan Kong who plays her father fixed.

It's great both to include that dialog and care enough about it being accurate to check, but interesting that they rely on actors.

Was she a Halo fan before the series?

No, but she was aware of it courtesy of her brother having played the game.

Speaking about the shows' mixed reviews she offered:

For original ‘Halo’ fans, I know there is more resistance against the series’ narrative. For those who were introduced to the series for the first time, they were more generous, and they also liked the character of Kwan.

Like Yerin we had no experience of the franchise before this series, so could only judge on its own merits.

Broadly speaking we enjoyed it and will be watching season two but even without any comparison to the games the show is very uneven.

Dialog is sometimes fine. Other times garbage.

The performances of the main cast are solid, including Yerin, but not so much the supporting cast.

With whom Yerin has a lot of scenes.

Her character's season one story also isn't satisfying and feels superfluous.

Episode seven - which focuses on Kwan - stood out to us as particularly bad and we're not surprised to see it's the lowest rated episode on IMDb with 4.1.

Other episode scores range from 6.6 to 8.1.

Hopefully they can do better next season which is expected to enter production soon, and with a different showrunner.
