Star Trek: Strange New Worlds last week released their season one teaser and it lives up to its strange moniker.

Prior to this we had been reservedly optimistic. Now we're just confused.

The teaser begins with a seemingly retired Captain Pike (Anson Mount) living in a present day style home out in the wilderness being called back to duty.

Seen it before, eg. Generations, Picard, Stargate, but that's no big deal.

Then we hear the voice of Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) narrating:

No matter how many stars there are in the sky

No matter how many galaxies swirl, beyond our own

No matter what the mathematical probabilities or the number of times we say we are not alone in the universe

Our first visit from the stars is always the province of childrens' stories and science fiction

Until one day, it isn't.

In Star Trek, Earth's first visit from the stars, by Vulcans, occurs prior to Strange New Worlds.

We see it during the First Contact film.

Unless they're promising alien visitation on real, i.e. not science fiction, Earth.

Which doesn't seem likely.

The apparently aptly titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount+ on May 5.
