Chinese sci-fi epic The Wandering Earth 2 will release in US and Canadian cinemas, including Imax.

It's a prequel to The Wandering Earth by Chinese sci-fi author Liu Cixin who also wrote best-seller The Three Body Problem.

The Wandering Earth film adaptation screened on cinemas in China but Netflix secured international rights.

Breaking it down to the basics - the notion of strapping huge honking rockets to the Earth's surface and steering it to a new location sounds absurd.

However, the film is well written and made and it is novel to see China represented in film in a more positive light.

Without the film tripping over itself and stumbling into flagrant propaganda territory.

The sequel's trailer paints the picture of a less action and more philosophically oriented film.

Last year when commenting on the trailer for Korea's Alienoid, we noted that it wasn't releasing in Australian cinemas (at that time) and we'd just have to keep an eye out for it on streaming services.

Probably Netflix.

Also that Netflix having established the global appetite for non-English language content, surely it would only be a matter of time before we'd begin seeing cinemas follow suit.

This might be it.

There is no information available at this time about The Wandering Earth 2 receiving a cinematic release in Australia but we will keep an eye out for news on that front.

It may depend on how well it performs in the US.

The Wandering Earth 2 releases in China, the US and Canada on January 22.
