Animated X-Men Reboot
Posted By:

SyFy Wire reports that Disney are rebooting the 90s animated X-Men series.

But the good kind of reboot. Continuation rather than a do-over.

It's not a huge surprise. After disappearing from screens for a very long time, the original series joined Disney+ in October last year.

As a widely loved classic, if Disney get this right, it could help to repair relations with disenfranchised viewers.

A thriving X-Men TV series could also help to stabilise the franchise in the face of film continuity chaos.

There were Bryan Singer's original 3 films. The first two were great.

They were undone courtesy of time travel in Days of Future Past.

Fans rarely appreciate undos but Last Stand (no. 3) was such a disappointing telling of the Dark Phoenix tale that they were largely on board with that.

Then there were some more good films and a few more duds, including Dark Phoenix.

Again.

How embarassing.

Meanwhile in corporate takeover land, Disney acquired Fox and with it the rights to all things mutant.

So everyone is expecting yet another film reboot of some kind as the X-Men are returned to the larger Marvel universe.

How exhausting.

A good revival of this animated series could ground the X-Men while Disney and Marvel sort out their place in the films.

Due to release in 2023 X-Men '97 will stream on Disney+.
