France and Sci-Fi

When talking about upcoming French sci-fi Parallels on Disney+ we touched on a quote from a Disney France VP which seemed to suggest that sci-fi isn't very popular there.

But that's not the case. In a Deadline exclusive interview, series creator Quoc Dang Tran tells us that prior to streaming it just couldn't be made in France.

He conceived of this show more than a decade ago but genre television production was seen as the purview of the UK and US.

That makes sense.

Netflix has profoundly changed the entertainment industry.

Before it came along, production was largely dictated by the vagaries of US network television.

Take scheduling, advertising etc. out of the equation and we see that there is a sizeable audience for both sci-fi and not made in English content.

Parallels will release on Disney+ on March 23.
