Lego Goes Dark Side
Posted By:

About a week ago Warner Bros. released a gameplay trailer for their upcoming game, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

It's totally dark side.

Say you're a film / game studio who has so badly mishandled a franchise's films that you've alienated much of your fanbase and many prefer to simply pretend those films don't exist and not buy new content.

What can you do?

You have a successful series of games representing earlier films.

Skip releasing games based on the new films - they only released one for Episode VII - and just rerelease the earlier games packaged with the new ones as a new saga.

Ha! Can't avoid the new content now, can you?

Well yes, we can not buy this.

Mmm.

Let's add an achievement / chore system on top of the whole thing which requires playing all content including for the unpopular films, and unlock a few new minor features with that.

Ha! Can't avoid the new content now, can you?

Well yes, we can not buy this.

It's a good trailer but can this game dark side it's way through the broader franchise problems?

We'll have to wait and see.

Interestingly they labelled an earlier Star Wars Lego bundle the "complete" saga. Almost like a prescient invitation to ignore this one.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches on April 5 on PC, Xbox, Playstation and Ninendo Switch.
