Order of the Apocalypse

Amid persistent rumours that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will be delayed to later this year or next and with last year's Marvel Midight Suns and Gotham Knights both bombing to different extents, fans of comic inspired or themed gaming might be pleased to know that there's another indie title looking to scratch your itch - Lethal Honor: Order of the Apocalypse for which there is now a gameplay overview trailer.

We recently praised Remnant 2 for its freshly unveiled completely proceduralised story and Lethal Honor is also bringing procedural innovation to the table.

Lethal Honor's progression model is a new take on roguelites. Hand-drawn comic panels are seamlessly integrated into the gameplay to structure your routes passing procedural runs. With every run and every death, you come closer to waking one of the main characters each with their own story to play. Intense and brutal but rewarding close quarter melee combats will test your skills. Attacking relentlessly will only lead to your early demise. Kill or be killed, run or be run over, give in return but never give up!

Travel through different zones with an original progression system, that will encourage you to revisit scenarios and grant you access to content that was previously hidden. Mixed with hundreds of items, relics, and artifacts that will force you to adapt your combat style to maximize their benefits.

Explore and unravel a mature and dark story full of secrets. Each main protagonist will move the events forward with a complex story told through comics and events with a strong and deep emotional burden.

Roguelites aren't our cup of tea and we won't be playing this one but theirs does look like an interesting take on that genre.

For the benefit of non-gamers, many games use some form of procedural generation but roguelites are perhaps best known for gamifying death.

In most games "death" is nothing like death in that the game eg. merely loads your most recent save and you keep going.

Better avoided because you lose a small amount of progress but not terribly punishing.

One of the key features of roguelikes (with a k) is permadeath. You're expected to have enjoyed the game enough the first and following times to start over from the beginning, repeatedly.

Instead of punishing you for dying, roguelites are a subgenre which allow some form of progression across deaths and dying might actually be required to finish the game.

This game's spin on that does look fresh to us though we say that having never paid much attention to this genre.

Lethal Honor: Order of the Apocalypse is coming to PC (Steam), Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch but doesn't have a release date or window.
