That said, most people are probably aware of cryptocurrencies but possibly not NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

They're a cousin of cryptocurrencies but instead of being a unit of currency, each represents an individual asset - which may be real or digital.

If you've been gaming for more than 5 seconds you can probably guess how they could apply there - to various kinds of real money transactions (i.e. exhanging real world money for in-game money or items).

Steam have now said a firm no to them.

Epic said a firm no in a tweet on September 28:

We aren’t touching NFTs as the whole field is currently tangled up with an intractable mix of scams, interesting decentralized tech foundations, and scams.

but have since advised that they are open to accepting such games on the Epic Games Store.
