Intel have estimated that as it is being presented to the public, as a shared virtual work and play environment populated by billions of people, the metaverse will require a 1000-fold increase in computational efficiency above today's best.
Also the internet itself will need a massive upgrade.

Inspired by Iceland, an official tourist website for Iceland, has produced a clever ad capitaling on Mark Zuckerberg's recent announcement of Facebook's rebranding and plans for the Metaverse:
Enhanced actual reality without silly looking headsets.
Author Neal Stephenson has tweeted clarification that he has no involvement in Facebook's Meta rebranding.
Since there seems to be growing confusion on this: I have nothing to do with anything that FB is up to involving the Metaverse, other than the obvious fact that they're using a term I coined in Snow Crash. There has been zero communication between me and FB & no biz relationship.
