Borderlands Film Update
Posted By:

What happened to the Borderlands film whose trailer was so well received at last year's Cinemacon in April? Then nothing but silence.

Reshoots taking place this March with a different director Tim Miller (Deadpool) because Eli Roth is unavailable.

Following the very disappointing reception and performance of last year's March release looter shooter action roleplaying game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands set in the same universe, we suspect this has less to do with the quality of the film they made and more to do with the game.

Tiny Tina is one of the film's characters.

Previous Borderlands games having been extremely successful and dominating the looter shooter scene for years, it would have made perfect sense for Tiny Tina to have a substantial role in this film.

Possibly also referencing her tabletop Dungeons and Dragons style game within a game, which is Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

Had it performed better we might have seen the film hit cinemas soon after.

Narrative adventure game New Tales from the Borderlands which released in October also floundered and also features several characters from the film, though not Tina.

Film reshoots might also seek to scrub ties to that game.

Interestingly press associated with this focuses on Cate Blanchett.

In the movie, Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett before she filmed Tár, the movie that has made her a Best Actress frontrunner), is an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

She wasn't a nobody before Tar but we wonder if the Borderlands film's producers might use it as an excuse to make her role more substantial in these reshoots.

We wouldn't hate to see more Cate.

Nobody has any idea when we'll actually see this film but we're keeping an eye on developments.
