Fantasy Wins
Posted By:

Reviews for survival horror The Callisto Protocol are coming in and like Gotham Knights, some major sites (Gamespot) have scored it a terrifying 5 out of 10. Its current review average on Metacritic is 74.

Horizon Forbidden West, Stray and Grounded garnered critical praise but not as much as fantasy titles Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok.

Looks like fantasy won at the gaming table this year.

The Callisto Protocol is generally being described as cinematically satisfying but views on its combat are mixed and it suffers from bizarre problems like the inability to skip cutscenes.

That's a standard game feature because there are good reasons - like you've seen it before - to skip those.

And this is a game which sold itself on a brutal and unforgiving combat experience which would kill you repeatedly.

If you happen to die and need to revert to a save before a cutscene, you're just stuck watching it again.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is faring slightly better with reviewers than The Callisto Protocol but isn't tearing ahead of the pack.

Looking Ahead

Could next year be better for sci-fi gaming?

Bethesda's Starfield was one of the many sci-fi titles delayed to 2023 or beyond.

Looking just at their single-player roleplaying games, they've been making great and extremely popular games for decades.

They should be a safe bet.

Multiplayer survival Ark: Survivor Evolved 2 and real time strategy space Homeworld 3 could also be strong contenders.

We're less across fantasy gaming but of those the only one of this which might be in the same league that we're aware of is Hogwarts Legacy.

Fingers crossed for a better 2023.
