Geeked Week Films

Netflix conducted their second day of livestreaming for their annual Geeked Week event celebrating upcoming genre content.

Day Two was dedicated to films and while we don't have enough time to watch the full one and a half hour stream, we have looked at all of the new teasers and trailers.

There's less to look at in film than series and two of those three release this month, and the third in August.

Spiderhead

We've been provided with a new clip for their upcoming film, Spiderhead.

Two inmates (Miles Teller & Jurnee Smollett) form a connection while grappling with their pasts in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary (Chris Hemsworth) who experiments on his subjects with mind-altering drugs.

The clip is just as creepy as we were expecting from the film's synopsis though the comically named drugs Luvactin (aphrodisiac) and Verbaluce (to loosen the tongue) took us by surprise.

Spiderhead releases on June 17.

Blasted

This Norwegian comedy sci-fi film hasn't received much promotional attention but the basic idea and trailer look intriguing.

Blasted follows childhood friends Sebastian (Axel Bøyum) and Mikkel (Fredrik Skogsrud), who are reunited for Sebastian’s bachelor party. While Mikkel never matured past teenage laser tag-prodigy, Sebastian has grown into a career-obsessed workaholic who’s using the party to schmooze a potential client. But when the bachelor party stumbles head-first into an alien invasion, it’s up to Mikkel and Sebastian to reunite as the kick-ass lasertag duo they once were and fight back.

Alien invasion comedies can be fun, eg. Slither, and the "Bros before hos" line made us crack a smile so we'll give this one a look when it lands.

Blasted releases on June 28.

Day Shift

They've provided what they're calling an inside look for upcoming vampire hunting flick Day Shift.

The vampire genre is almost outrageously overcrowded and it's difficult to do anything new in this space.

It doesn't look Day Shift is even trying, even though they claim otherwise.

J.J.'s taken some vampire mythology and put it in crazy situations of gun fights and car chases and motorcycle chases.

None of that is new.

Though films don't have to be innovative to be enoyable or popular.

Netflix's Red Notice is one of the least original films we've ever seen and was still fun to watch.

Day Shift releases on August 12.
