Journey to Foundation

Quite the attention grabber.

Long considered one of the cornerstones of modern science fiction, Isaac Asimov's Foundation series had never before been adapted for gaming and of course there's the Apple TV+ series.

You play as Ward, an agent of the powerful Commission of Public Safety, who is sent to investigate civil unrest at the edge of the Galactic Empire. The Empire has kept peace across the galaxy for over 12 thousand years, but cracks have started to emerge. Stagnation, apathy, and internal revolt all threaten to break it apart.

Your mission takes a turn when you discover a group of defectors who are planning to abandon the Empire and make their way to the Foundation, an organization that was formed by famous psychohistorian Hari Seldon, who used mathematics to predict the Fall of the Empire. The player must join with the defectors to learn more about the Foundation and their plan to save humanity.

In the end, you’ll need to decide who to trust. Will you fight for a dying Empire, or will you defect to the Foundation and help rebuild what has been lost?

Your potential arsenal includes guns, gadgets and funky mind powers.

We don't own a console and wouldn't buy either that or the additional VR2 just to play this but assuming it's actually good - always worth checking reviews and gameplay - we would regard this as substantially value adding to that console technology.

Journey to Foundation is coming to PS VR2 in Spring (Oz).

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

For the sake of transparency, we aren't fans of either Suicide Squad film.

The second, Gunn's, is not as bad as the first but still a bit average in our view.

Series spinoff Peacemaker is great.

On a more general level the notion of playing villains / antiheroes isn't especially appealing.

Many gamers are excited for this title but we are not.

There are two Aussie connections though, in playable characters Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn.

With a name like Captain Boomerang you might guess where he's from, and our Margot Robbie played Harley in the films.

The co-op gameplay trailer looks fantastic and ends with establishing the premise for this game - corrupted heroes must die.

Mmm.

In the behind the scenes video, developers Rocksteady begin by differentiating themselves from last year's Gotham Knights without actually mentioning it by name.

Suicide Squad is set in what they're calling the Arkhamverse (i.e. their Batman:Arkham games) and begins five years after Arkham Knights.

Gotham Knights was made by a different developer and also not a part of that DC continuity.

Rocksteady do a rock solid job selling the game and end by promising post launch support - new playable characters, weapons and missions.

A battle pass will be available but only contains cosmetic items.

So what we hadn't realised before watching these videos is that Microsoft published Arkane's Redfall releasing on May 2 and this releasing on May 26 are both competing to be the next big thing in online co-op shooters.

Both from developers with exceptional critical and sales success.

Battle passes and paying for visual customization options is controversial but before they before they dropped that bomb right at the end, they were possibly very cleverly showcasing all the ways in which Suicide Squad will be superior to Redfall.

Redfall won't allow character respecs (i.e. changing how you've assigned skill points).

If you want to try something new even with the same character, you need to start the game again.

Ditto for playing any other character.

When you play solo it's just you.

The developer's hope is that players will just keep replaying the same game - set entirely in one small town - over and over.

Suicide Squad is a 4 person / fish game and when you're not joined by other players, the game controls the other three.

Developers said you can freely switch between which of those 4 you control.

Implied is that you don't need to play and level them individually.

In the recent IGN Fan Fest there was a new Redfall trailer and developer commentary.

While we indicated in our blog that we might revisit some items, upon watching that ten plus minutes of Redfall footage, we came away with only a single new detail - untethered co-op - and a sense of our time having been utterly wasted.

Not blogworthy.

However, lining it up against Suicide Squad, in nearly every respect it looks outclassed.

Don't know if we'll end up playing either of these games but May just became a much more interesting month from our perspective.

Redfall releases on PC and Xbox X|S on May 2.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League releases on PC, Xbox X|S and PS5 on May 26.
