Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are about to premiere their latest project, a sci-fi epic about Earth's encounter with an alien civilization.

3 Body Problem is based on a series of books by author Liu Cixin about a decision made by a scientist in 1960’s China that reverberates across time and space. The storyline is quite complex and series co-creator Alexander Woo has told audiences to expect the experience of the novel to be conveyed on screen, not the exact detail of the novel.

The trailer focuses on a countdown that haunts nanotech pioneer Auggie Salazar. The sequence of numbers she sees in her visions appears to be related to a string of recently deceased scientists and she may be the next victim. Intelligence officer Da Shi (played by Marvel’s Benedict Wong) believes “someone or something is targeting scientists”.

Aliens, perhaps? And what is the weird silver headset all about? The trailer is fairly cryptic.

As might be expected the cast is replete with GoT alumni including John Bradley, Jonathan Pryce and Liam Cunningham.

3 Body Problem premieres on Netflix March 21.
