A sequel for fan-financed sci-fi feature Code 8 is on its way to Netflix, with a teaser just released.
The original was a passion project for cousins Robbie and Stephen Arnell after their roles as heroes in CW series Arrow and The Flash. After producing a short in 2016, Indiegogo backers pledged US$2.4 million to finance production of the feature, released in 2019.
Code 8 posits a world where four percent of humans have superpowers, but rather than them being glorified as heroes they are discriminated against and marginalised, living in poverty. In desperation some use their powers on behalf of gangsters and are hunted by a mechanised police unit.
Robbie Arnell plays Connor, a janitor who is convinced by Garret (Stephen Arnell) to pull off a series of heists to find money for his mother’s health problems. In the sequel they reluctantly team back up to protect Pav, a teenage girl who becomes the target of corrupt cops after asking too many questions about the death of her brother.
Director Jeff Chan has also returned to helm part two.
No release date for Code 8 Part II has been announced yet, with the movie expected on Netflix sometime in 2024.
