Netflix have dropped a trailer for their live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Based on the mid-2000’s animated series, it is set in a mystical world of four nations, each with the power to manipulate one of the four elements: fire, earth, water and air, a process known as “bending”.
The story follows young Aang who is the reincarnation of the Avatar, the only person with power over all four elements and responsible for ensuring peace between the nations.
Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, initially ran away from this awesome responsibility and in his absence the fire nation went to war, wiping out the air nation of which Aang is now the last surviving member. After being found and returning to his training, he continues to be hunted by the fire prince Zuko.
Showrunner Albert Kim assured fans the adaptation would not disappoint, saying “[a] live-action version can not only faithfully translate what had been done in animation — it can bring a rich new visual dimension to a fantastic world.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender will be released on Netflix February 22.
